What sort of projects do you work on?

I work on the design for e-marketing, internet advertising projects and other interactive projects. I also work on the back-end for these projects such as a program to track results or manage content. The project could be a website, manual, newsletter, advertisement, promotion and could be web-based or delivered by email. It can be mostly development work or mostly design work but usually would require both.
What sort of clients do you work for?

I've had almost ten years of experience and have worked for many types of clients. I specifically have had the most experience working for retail, high-tech and financial clients.
What is a designer/developer? Are you a designer or a developer?

I am an interactive designer. A designer/developer is simply a designer who has very good programming skills. I am sometimes hired for projects that are largely development work but there is always some part that makes use of my design skills as well.
I like your photography or illustration, could we hire you to create something for us?

Thanks for your interest. Photography and illustration skills are often good to have as a designer. Most of my clients have an in-house digital photo studio to take a quick picture when something simple is needed. I've used my illustration for quite a few projects. But I am always hired first as a designer. If you only need some images, you should contact a photographer or illustrator.
We have an idea for something we'd like to do with our e-marketing, internet advertising, website etc..., is it possible to create some original code to do this?

This is a very common question and I have yet to come across a development challenge without a solution. So the answer is yes, it would be possible.
What is your rate?

It requires a full understanding of the project to answer this question but I charge a fair market rate for my work. The internet is full of resources to check the typical income for a Senior Designer/Developer. A consultant typically spends half his working time on billable hours so taking this into consideration it should be easy to guess what that fair rate would be. Organizations such as the AIGA and the Graphic Artist Guild are great resources for getting help in understanding how much you should expect to pay someone like me.
How do you work generally, on-site or off-site?

Generally I am an off-site project-based consultant. There is a clear and specific project that needs to be completed and I work on this off-site. For some projects I do work on-site occasionally.
Would you like to partner with our start-up because it could lead to a lot of design work in the future?

I have a passion for business and when I listen to someone talk about their business idea I get excited about it too and want to be a part of it as well. However, I have worked for many small businesses or start-ups, even clients like married couples who are finally giving an idea for their own business a shot or other independent consultants like myself and every client I've had has paid me a fair rate for all the work I did for them.
Could you show us some ideas of what you would do for us to help us decide if we should hire you?

This is called "spec work" for work that is done with the speculation that you will get a new client. Major ad agencies could pitch new multi-million dollar accounts like this but independent consultants like myself do not. Our work experience and samples are what potential clients review to decide if we are right for them.
Are you hiring?

I am an independent consultant and do not have employees.
